The July 2009 meeting of QBTB was opened by new president, Mardell Buffington. There were no guests, but 3 new members signed up. There were 6 birthdays. The new officers were introduced and it was announced that the meetings will continue to be on the 4th Wednesday of the month. Mark your calendars. The secretary, Marcia Cramer, is trying to get the e-mail list up to date. She will bring a few copies of the minutes to the meetings to post and to hand to any member who does not have e-mail access. The treasurer, Sharon Maes, reported a balance of $4154.78 with all outstanding bills paid. She will post the report and month’s expenses at the meetings and welcomes questions. Membership chair, Wanita Canifax, is collecting dues for the new year. Dues are $30 and are considered delinquent as of Aug. 1. Pat Ditter, outgoing Community Services Chair, reported that the guild made 51 quilts this year for the Orting Old Soldiers Home. Pretty amazing, don’t you think? Much of the credit is due to Dona Dvorak who generously opened her store, Trains Fabrics Etc., to us for sewing and longarm quilting of the quilts. Kim Killen and Jackie Anderson are the new Community Service Chairs. Our new charity project for this year will be Mary Bridge Hospital. We will be making comfort quilts for children ages 2 to 18 that are withdrawn from danger and held at MBH until they are put into the foster system. Sometimes these children are taken suddenly from a bad situation and have nothing. We will make baby and lap size quilts for them. As a secondary project we will also make bags for walkers for the Franciscan Hospice. A pattern will be provided. Historian Andrea McColeman is hard at work on scrapbooks with our history and asked for photographs for the books. The guild website is maintained by Cheryl Kneale and Carol Carroll. Check it out and offer suggestions. It is a great resource. Norma Jean Nyman announced that there are 1600 raffle tickets out. Over 200 were sold at Trains Fabrics, Etc. during shop hop. Thanks again, Dona. Volunteers are needed to present the quilt at other guild meetings and activities. Norma Jean wrote a letter to Safeway Corp asking for permission to be allowed to sell raffle tickets outside the stores on occasion. Waiting to hear back. Other possible places to show the raffle quilt are: Duck Days, UP Festival, Proctor Art Festival, Farmers Markets, sewing stores. See if you can find a place to show our beautiful quilt. Rose Flannigan announced a Stained Glass quilt class. There will be 2 one day classes offered - August 6 and 13, Thursdays. The classes will be from 5pm to 9pm and cost $25. Supply list to be provided. Sign up now. Rose: 565-9018 The new Block of the Month is an attractive Bear Claw block submitted by Cheryl Kneale. The winner of the July blocks is Wanita Canifax. The fall retreat is full and has a wait list. The spring retreat scheduled for April 23-2 began signups. 26 of the 30 slots were filled this meeting. Refund policy: there are no refunds, however, the retreat chairs will help find someone to fill your place if you cannot go. There has always been a wait list and the no refund policy helps with bookkeeping. A new committee to handle storing and giving out the raffle quilt for showing will be run by Carole Boughten and Jan Jansen. A volunteer is needed to schedule and recruit people to show the quilt. It comes with its own rolling suitcase. Mardell did the annual reading of the By-Laws. The guild will not participate in the U.P. garage sale this year. We will participate in the U. P. Christmas Bazaar the date of which has not yet been set. We will provide pillow cases, many which have already been made, for sale at $8.00. We will also have hand crafted items such as potholders, doll blankets, and crayon packs. (Trina Rounds has a pattern.) The money will go to the guild to help finance speakers. Susan Harmon volunteered to work the bazaar. Pat Ditter will head a new Equipment Committee. She will inventory and house all the equipment belonging to the guild and will check it in and out like a library. Thanks, Pat, this is really needed. The guild received a letter from Innovations who are having a big show in September down town. They need 2 people a day to assist the vendors from 10 to 6pm on Sept. 16,17,18, and 19. For this service they will pay the guild $800.00. Volunteers are needed. This is a great fund raiser for us. Show and Tell policy. It has been a problem when we have speakers to fit it in the time we have, but S & T is very popular with the membership. It was suggested on nights where time is short we show the projects at 6:30 and display them on the tables in the back so we can all enjoy the work we do. Our custodian, Rick, thanked us for the $50 certificate for eating out. This month we did have time for Show and Tell. Pat Ditter showed a delightful quilt she made for a grand child. Susan Harmon is working on a rabbit themed baby quilt Barbara Kadden showed us a gorgeous wedding quilt she designed and made for friends. Pat Ditter also showed the last two Old Soldier Quilts. Our program this month consisted of demos given by guild members. Norma Jean Nyman demonstrated a handy technique for making quarter square triangles. She showed us how to make perfect ones that lie flat and are a consistent size. Joyce Walker discussed accuracy and measurement. She showed us how to straighten fabric and how to cut and sew consistent strip sets. The group was very engaged and had lots of questions. Respectfully submitted, Marcia Cramer, Secretary
